How do drain the fuel tank on a kz1000? Do I need a vacuum pump?

I've pulled the fuel line and put the petcock on reserve but the fuel won't drain. I'm new and trying to figure this out.

Thanks

Try putting the petcock handle in the "RES" or PRI" position rather than in the "ON" position you show in your photo. Ed

The fuel line is the one that goes to the "T" down between the carbs. The vacuum line typically just goes to the #2 carb toward the front of the carb. Also, try putting the petcock on "PRI". Fuel should flow. Ed

As 650Ed wrote, PRI is the position to drain the tank or prime the carburetors after they are reinstalled. That is a vacuum operated fuel valve. When the engine is running, fuel should flow from either RUN or RES. Normally, it should be in the RUN position. When the fuel level in the tank gets down to a certain level ( about 1.5 or less gallons left) the engine will sputter a bit, then you should move the lever to RES and start looking for a gas station. When you fill the tank up, move the lever back to RUN and repeat.
Don't neglect to install a good inline fuel filter after you drain and refill the tank. Be sure the filter is designed for a gravity feed (no fuel pump) system.

You can, or you can remove the fuel line from the petcock and simply replace it temporarily with a long line that will reach the gas can you are draining fuel into. Ed

I'm looking for a little help. I recently changed the oil and may have overfilled a bit. The bike turns over and will occasionally run idle for a few seconds and then shut down. I hold the electric start button down for about 10 seconds and sometimes it starts but when I go to throttle it shuts down. Will overfilling the oil cause this problem? Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Instead of taking a chance on damaging something I HIGHLY recommend you simply remove the excess oil. It is extremely simple to do; just run a small clear plastic tube down into the oil filler hole and siphon some out. Then ensure the oil level is correct by looking at the site gauge on the right side of the engine. Ed

Can you tell me if its ok to these carburetors in a dip basket overnight to clean?

Where do you get RTD1000?

Cool old bike. I rode/owned nothing but Yamaha singles, enduros with the newest being an '81 XT500 (which I just sold recently, regretfully). I just got an '83 KZ1100A and I love it. To have a bike with disc brakes, 12V electric start and blinkers you can see in the daytime is the shit for me. Having about 80 more horsepower on tap than anything I've ever had is nice also. The KZ remains somewhat intimidating to me, mainly wheeling it around and manuvering at stops (the fold up footpegs helps me here), but feels perfectly natural once rolling along. I also get a good bit of attention when we stop, seems alot of guys had KZ's back in the day, and they gotta' tell me about the time...I think the big KZ is gonna' stay around awhile. I wouldn't sell it for 2X what I paid. About 0-80 mph is where the fun is for me, a guarenteed smile... there sure is alot of cool old big jap bikes on CL lately for a grand or two, if only I had a bit of trumps money, HA
