My first 1000
12 Jan 2017 11:43 - 12 Jan 2017 11:43
Hi everyone,
I'm from Belgium and just bought a kz1000j, with a grand prix seat on it. My friend told me it is a grand prix, but after looking up some more info I don't think they made 1000cc grand prix models?
Anyways, this is my first 1000cc bike like this. I have a honda cb750, cx500, had a suzuki bandit 600 and now a kz1000j from 1981 if I remember correctly. It has a lot of work to do, and still doubting what to do. Keep it original or do a restomod.
Either way, it will have a lot of work to do whatever option I take.
This looks like a great forum so I'm glad to be a part of it. See you soon!
Cheers

Welcome. I have a 1982 J model that is pretty close to stock other than mirrors, black painted engine cases, and rear Ohlin shocks. Have had it a long time and it still runs great.

Nice project.
The seat looks like an aftermarket Giuliari seat.
Is there a name on the back or on the bottom/pan?
The front end has had a late model up side down front fork installed.
Is there a set of gauges; speedo and tach?

Thanks a lot. I couldn't see anything about giuliairi seat, only grand prix marked in the back.. It has a zx9r front end but not sure what to do with it yet. The bike looks like this now after a lot of cleaning.
It doesn't have any gauges mounted. The front beamers are taped to the bike, so is the brake reservoir. I do have the gauges from the kz1000 but they look rough and the glass is broken.

1980's Guillari 'Grand Prix' 2:4 sport seat, usually in black but occasionally in red or white. Quite sought after nowadays, although NOS seats still turn up on ebay Italy.
You'll love the motor on that, really strong. Unusual to see a modded bike with original 4-2 pipes and airbox, usually the first bits to go.
Take it easy when you get it running and start getting a feel for the handling, particularly that 17" front conversion, you have reduced rake and trail and it may be twitchy and have too much turn in on bends. Also possible front and rear tyre mismatch. I might handle just great too.
Just don't take anything for granted on modified bikes if you haven't done it yourself.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces
