Hi all, new to kzriders, got an old kz1000p 1999 been stood for a new of years, got the engine to run fine but when I put it in gear it kills the motor. Tried it on the centre stand and still the same thing happens.
In nutral the back wheelturns freely, anyone got anh idea what could be wrong?

Try pulling in the clutch lever.
There's an "anti idiot safety feature" micro switch that prevents 1st gear engagement without the clutch lever being pulled.
Also may be another on the side stand which stops you riding off without it being retracted.
Common problem for either of these play up and most owner remove or bypass them.

Does it lurch forward when you put it in 1st? If it has sat for many years the clutch plates might be stuck.

With the bike on the centerstand and the rear tire free to turn pull in the clutch and try shifting into 1st. If the motor continues to run that means the electrical systems for the clutch, neutral and side stand interlocks are OK. If that's the case, the rear brake can be used while running on the centerstand to free the clutch. With the motor running, keep the clutch lever pulled in, select 1st and start applying the rear brake. You might have to give it some gas while doing this if the plates are badly stuck. The plates will be free when you can hold the rear wheel still using the rear brake while idling in 1st with the clutch lever pulled in.

If the clutch frees up doing this, consider replacing the fiber plates. Once they get sticky they usually stay sticky.

I can get it into gear but as you start to let the clutch out and it starts to drive the engine just dies, with the engine not running and the clutch fully in and in 1st gear I can turn the rear wheel so I don',t think it's the clutch?

Don,t think the clutch is stuck, as I can turn the back wheel when on the centre stand, as soon as the engine starts to take up the drive the engine just cuts out?
