Found a winter project
01 Oct 2015 17:16
Just picked up an 82 KZ750 LTD for a winter project. I'm new to motorcycles, having just bought my first one 2 months ago. It's a 2016 Ducati Scrambler. I've already put 1500 miles on it.
I picked up the KZ to have some wrench fun with. I've already got it starting and running right. Swapped out the hideous buckhorn bars with some low bars. I mounted a master cylinder from a 94 ninja after I realized the LTD master wouldn't work with the new bars. My ultimate goal is to make this a safe and fun bike for my dad to ride.
Here is the Ducati

Those buckhorns were not my cut of tea either, but your Dad may find the new bars a bit of a reach. Something more like stock Non-LTD KZ750 or KZ650 bars might be more comfortable for him if he finds the new bars hard on his back. Here's what the stock KZ650-B and C bars look like; they are very comfortable. Ed

You may also take a look at the footpegs, they may be too far forward with the new bars. Standard KZ pegs may swap on, and correct the riding position.

I have a z750E. I was thinking about changing the bars to what is known as 'superbike bars' but after much research, I realised that they have pretty much the same dimensions as the stock bars (what Ed is showing in the photo).
The next lowest bars are drag bars that are totally flat. There is also a euro style bar that has a bit more rise than the superbike bars.
That LTD is set up for plenty of pull back on the bars. Those straight bars will be horribly uncomfortable. And if it's for your old boy, comfort is really important. That bike is designed for a certain riding position. Just changing the bars won't change that. I know where you're coming from though.

Thanks for the advise on the bars guys. Those are the "super bike" style bars that I put on. I like the riding position they provide, but my old man may not. They were only $25, so no huge loss if I need to swap them for something a little taller. I've got a set of stock bars from a KZ440 kicking around that I might consider. I didn't know the non-ltd bikes had different front pegs, I'll have to look into that.
Overal, the bike is in good shape. No rust (except for the exhaust), 23,000 miles, and the engine runs good. I paid $900 for it. I ordered some miscellaneous seals, a carb sync guage, and a Delkevic exhaust for it yesterday.

The next size up from the superbike bars would be European bars, then I guess Daytonas.
If you want to change the footpegs, the 750E foot rests probably would be a direct bolt-on.
You might need to swap the Rr brake pedal & gear shifter as well. The 750E foot rest brackets appear to be shorter, so I guess the other stuff is as well. ???

I'm guessing the pegs are positioned a little forward of the location on the standard model. Not sure, but that would be typical
