Newbie here with a z1100
07 Feb 2015 18:46
Hi everyone, been looking for this kinda page for a while now so happy to have found yous.
Bought a Z1100 A3 6 months ago in a right state, don't shoot me but I decided it was in to much a mess to put right so my caferacer was born. About 3/4 weeks from finishing and can't wait to get her out.
Hope to get to know you all soon
Gary

On the bike docs all it says is Z1100'A3
But from what I've read they where all shaft and this isn't, thinking someone's converted it and changed swinging arm. Any info would be great

I see the Z1100-A3 = GPz1100-A3 in the wheels, but little else. To determine what the frame started life as, get the embossed number on the main steering stem (skip the title papers) and post the first 10 digits or so...we should be able to puzzle it out. For me, I see the twin rear shocks as a non-Z1100-A model (the 1983-85 A models AKA GPz1100 were all monoshocks). It is possible that there has been a fair amount of alteration to convert the motorcycle already.

Gary welcome. The frame(that you started with) and tank look suspiciously like they are kz1000J or R(Z1000J/or Z1000R in Europe) ,or possibly a GPZ1100(Z1100B1 or B2). The Cafe progress looks nice. Are you going to use the speedometer unit or go with something more modern? If the original speedo is not being used I would be interested in it

Well, someone has gone through an awful lot of trouble to convert a shaftdrive to a chain drive as you really do (based on the frame VIN) have an Z1100A3 frame. The motor appears originally to be a 998cc Z1000J motor. Keep that conversion coming as it looks good.

Ah well that's good, docs say the engines a 1098cc so we'll see when it's running. Only 5 gears tho lol
I'm happy with what I've done so far and the frame and engine came up well. Not heard the motor running but I'm optimistic.
The only problem I think I might have is with the carbs but I've stripped cleaned and rebuilt so fingers crossed the just need setup once in
