New member in RI (for now)
06 Oct 2014 11:24
Hi,
I recently bought a 1981 KZ750LTD and began the tinkering early Sept.
History was a bit unknown but it had not been on the road for a few years. Bike had been painted by previous owner however he never had it on the road
It now runs well and I did 340miles on it last Friday
Have done some work to it to get it to this point
Tank was clean but needed a new pet cock and although it did run a bit it would not idle
Carb linkages were incorrect but the pictures in the manual gave me the info I needed
Replaced the clutch and throttle cables
Now oil and filter and replaced the air filter and spark plugs
Pulled every electrical connector and cleaned them all, replaced a few, threw out some odd wiring that didn't connect to anything
Replaced some bulbs and flasher unit
Did some rattle can painting myself of bits that needed a touch up
All 3 calipers were stuck so I got new seals and cleaned them all. Flushed the brake fluid
Replaced the front wheel bearings and steering head bearings
Bought and fitted new Hagon shocks as one was leaking and both were rusty beyond my cleaning skills
I have had a few bikes in my time and another KZ a few years back, 1979 KZ400.
Thanks to all of you on here who post technical articles and info I have read a few posts for extra ideas and am going to fit a new chain and sprockets soon, probably go for a 530. New handle bars and grips are on the way. The bike still needs lots of polishing and some paint and I am happy with it.
Think I will be replacing the starter clutch soon, it does start every time but sometimes it is a bit grumpy and makes some odd noises
I put the bike in the Fort Adams show on the weekend and enjoyed the experience. Mostly for cars but there were a few bikes there
Cheers, Tom
