New Texas Member, KZ1000

So my name is Dustin. I'm a 27 year old RN from East Texas, and I finally bought a motorcycle

I've been around various bikes my whole life, but never owned one. Actually I've never even driven one.

Long story short, I picked up a kz1000 CSR for $600. Its a complete bike, "running when parked" Its in need of some TLC, My neighbor and cousin both do custom motorcycle work, my neighbor is into big V twins, mostly V stars and Hondas, but his trade is a metal fabricator, so we can come up with some cool stuff. My cousin does more with the older KZs, GSs, etc. Hes owned several KZ 1000s.

Ive had the bike a week no, so far Ive removed the tank, seat, front fender, and some misc junk. The motor had no oil in it, but I've been told these are notorious for leaking out. oil drain plug was oily, no water, no milky junk anywhere so I think I'm fine. Soaked the cylinders in a little marvel, and they turn freely.

The front brake reservoir was like jello, someone probably tried to top dot 3 of with a little dot 5, but the lines were all clean clear fluid, Regardless, I took both front calipers off and totally stripped them down and cleaned them, waiting on rebuild kits to come in the mail. Ill probably getting new lines an MC anyway.

My plan is for a stripped down, clean bobber, nothing wild I'll probably keep the soft tail, no stretching are raking, just clean it up and simplify it. Solo seat, drag bars, nothing extra or fancy.

Welcome to KZR...keep us posted on your progress. As for 1000J series motors being leaky over time...they are not known for that.

Welcome!! Sounds like you have your hands full with the project. I redid mine a few years ago but I went with the cafe style. I love the early 80's Jap bikes! They can become whatever you dream, well whatever your pocket allows anyway..lol. Sound like you are on the right track tho'.. Brake line are always a plus to do! Nothing is worse than coming to a four way stop and one decides to burst. The carbs can be a bitch the first few times but after you do it a couple times its easy peasy.. As far as the oil leak goes they are prone to gaskets drying out if the oil is empty for a long time (as any bike, mower, atv, or anything would do). I had one a few years ago that the drain plug was leaking when I bought it so I went to take it out and the thread was stripped on the bad side (not the bolt). The p.o. tried to put teflon tape on it and sold it.. Good luck and keep us posted with pics of your journey :)

I have a few pics but none that I can upload just yet, I will soon.

Being a 1982 KZ1000, I thought that made its designation a 1000 M2? atleast thats what I've seen online, not much CSR specific info out there.

I'm trying to upload a picture from my desktop but I keep getting directed to a "Fatal Error" page.

Is my image too big?

OK cool, that works, Heres the night I brought her home. Since then she has lost the tank, seat, mirrors, fenders, blinkers, calipers are removed, broken down, cleaned, and ready for rebuild.
