Questions with LTD Wheels

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationHello everyone,
This is my first post on the forums and this is my first Kawasaki KZ 1000!!!
I have had a few Kawi's in the past but nothing like this beast! My last Kawasaki was a ZZR600 but i traded her for the KZ... I don't know much about these bikes and after searching the forum i decided to post a thread.

Anyways, she is a LTD and I want to undo the ltd part. Mainly, I don't really like the small 16" rear wheel and I want to go with a 18". I'd love to find some hubs and lace up some Excel rims, but right now that's out of my price range.

So here is my question, Will the police 18" wheel work?

Any advice is appreciated. I don't see how I could run into problems....but this bike is older than me and I thought I'd check in with the kzriders in the know.

Thanks!

Is that a cast wheel that matches the front? I have an 82 kz1000 an would be interested in a posible trade of my 18" wheel for your 16" one to put on my cruiser build.

Yeah the ebay looks identical to mine...
A straight up trade would save me some cash, do you have photos?

Your KZ1000 appears to be a 1980 or earlier Ltd. I don't know much about the Big KZs, but you need to be careful about what wheel to get. Some of the 70s type stuff is different from the 80s type stuff. 1980 is kind of a transition year, so those models can have either the early style or later style parts, depending upon the bike.

For example I think your 1000 has Br disks with 4-bolt-holes, whereas the 82 has 7-bolt-hole disks. Some of the other hub stuff is different as well, but I do not know how problematic it would be to make the swap. The Police wheel in the listing has a 4-bolt-hole disk... my guess is that it would be a good match for your bike, but that is just a guess... I really don't know much about the Big bikes.

You should compare the wheel & Rr Br stuff in the diagrams at Kawasaki.com or Partzilla.

Yah I see the brake bolt difference.

(sorry about all the grime, I haven't gotten started on the cleaning and polishing yet. Still in the fabrication faze)

would definately need to check on compatibility before trading.

Possibly @650ed or @patton might know about the compatibillity

Yes that is for sure , mine is a 1980. From all of the research i have done I noticed changes from year to year. From the ebay listing it looks identical to mine though....

Thanks for your input

From looking at the kawasaki parts diagrams, it seems we would have to swap everything.(wheel, axel, spacers, and caliper assemblies) assuming the swingarms are compatible with the swap. :(

If we could have bothe bikes side by side I would try it but wouldn't want to risk the long distance trade without at least some assurance that it would bolt right in.
