Hi there,
I just picked up an 1981 KZ1000. My last bike was a 2000 ZX-9R, and I miss it. I had to sell it after my first kid was born and the misses wanted me to get rid if it. 5 years later and she says I can build a café bike, so I picked a Kwaka again.

I'm trying to fix up the things that need replacing and have some essential on the way. Air box boots (they are hard as rocks and one wasn't even on the carb properly) new air filter as a mouse decided to make a nest in the air box in the PO's barn, and some other stuff. It already has a MAC 4-1 Cannister exhaust and I ordered a new baffle for it as the original is cracked.

Now my dilemma. In searching for some parts I see that for an 81 KZ1000 there are three variants. A KZ1000, KZ 1000 LTD and a KZ1000 CSR. The issue is that for fork springs, for example, the LTD and CSR use the 11-1110 springs but the "plain" KZ1000 uses the 11-1108 springs. I am seeing that the diameters on either of these id different, so that's not something to gamble on.

Is there a way to confirm my model as the bike came with now badges and all I have to identify it is the factory info sticker and the VIN. it was built in 9/81 and it's actually registered as a 1982 (WTF?). The VIN is JKAKZCK1XCA00xxxx. So what exactly do I have?

Attached is a pic of the bike as I got it..some fool along the way painted everything flat black with cheap rattle can paint, so that's gonna go...

Thanks in advance!

As I recall, the standard model has front axle located at bottom of fork sliders; and the LTD and CSR models have front axles on front of fork sliders like the bike at hand.

Thank you, gentlemen! That helps immensely!

Now I know the correct springs to get. Cam you direct me to who has new fork seals in stock? Partzilla is out. Also, which other parts would you recommend I pick up for a fork rebuild?

TIA, again!

Stazi,

In working on these bikes and soliciting help from others it is important to know what model motorcycle you own. As Patton pointed out, the is no such model as a 1982 KZ1000-K1, but that is the model you show in your signature.

There is a 1981 KZ1000-K1 and a 1982 KZ1000-K2. Which one (if ether) do you own?

Imo, when needing parts, Z1E is the best place to start looking. :cheer:
