hello all, new member here

not new to the bike world or the forums, im a regular poster over at zxforums for the last few years..
i currently own a 2004 kawasaki zx10r , that i recently got all finished, and that got me really pushing to speed up getting my next project. i have always wanted a kz as my "cruiser" style bike and the other day i found one and here it is..
i know a little about them , i dont believe the gas tank is stock for this year . i have a looonngg list of things i want to do. im here to join the community, learn about this beast and show some pics as i go.. here are some pics
and here is a pic of my daily

Looks like a decent bike to start with. I think the tank is correct for an 82. Welcome to the forum

one question i do have is, is there a major difference in the carbs from the 77-78 to the 80-83?? ive been looking at the dynojet kits like i had on my zx7 but im not sure if i have the stock motor/carbs out of the 82..

Earlier large Kaw fours were produced with manual slide carbs.
Later models, such as the '82 KZ1000, were produced with CV (constant vacuum) carbs.

Tank looks correct to me if its a J model.

the title says kz1000j... the carbs that are on it dont have any vacuum lines. other than the plugged off ports you would use to synch them with.. i would have to go out and look at the brand they are i think it starts with an "s". i believe the motor was put in in 2012 thats why i am unsure which it is.

welcome.
you do have cv carbs.
that is one style of tank you could have had.
the elr replica tank is the other style.
awesome looking project bike.
the 10 is cool looking to.

On models equipped with a vacuum operated petcock and carbs without such dedicated vacuum nipple, one of the carb holder nipples is generally used for the tube supplying vacuum to the vacuum operated petcock.
Examples of carbs with dedicated vacuum nipple for vacuum operated petcock, manual slide and CV carbs:

sooo what year of bike are my carbs off of being that they are the "cv" carbs... and the vaccuum ports are plugged im 99.9 percent sure
also is this the "j" model motor out of 1982 or is it out of another year.. i have been doing some research and i have a lot to learn about he mechanics of these

The 1982 KZ1000-J2 came from the factory (in black or silver) with CV carbs.
According to www.zedder.com , the 1982 KZ1000-J2 models had VIN's and engine numbers as follows:
VIN Range JKAKZCJ1vCA007901 - 017500
Engine No. Range KZTOOJE019201 -039300
The 1981 KZ1000-J1 came from the factory (in red) with CV carbs.
According to www.zedder.com , the 1981 KZ1000-J1 models had VIN's and engine numbers as follows:

thanks for that info ill look up the numbers just one last question, is it possible that it could have a different head on it? cause the stamp is on the crank case...
