Michigan kz650 new guy
21 May 2012 02:33
Hey all,
I was lurking a bit on here for tips for jet sizes and brake work on my kz650. The plan was to just get it running and sell it but it has grown on me big time. The bike is a blast to ride and I decided to make a smart move and choose a great running realible bike for a cafe racer build. I'm sick of always working on non running old bikes and never getting much ride time. The bike is a 1978 kz650. Stock besides pods and a 4 into 1. Jetted nicely and pulls smooth. With summer here I am not going to be tearing the bike down too much, just weekend mods where I can still ride the bike. I will post pictures in a few days, posting from the phone currently.
Looking forward to learning more about these bikes and getting some inspiration and ideas for my build. Also looking for any Michigan pals to meet up and ride!

Thanks for the welcomes ! I am in Rochester Hills, part of Oakland County.
Here's a picture of the bike before the build. I'm either saving the tank and plastics, or selling them to someone who want's some nice stock pieces. They are too nice to repaint or play with.

Welcome! I'm up here in Saginaw, got my kz650 from a guy up near Harrison that he found in a friend's barn in Plymouth and bought as a project bike. Lucky for me his Ford Bronco turned into a project truck and he needed money. I just got it running well enough to ride (she still pops when cold) after it sat for 30-ish years. I'm a brand spankin new rider and I've had my permit for less than a week, but it's been a helluva fun week! Nice to see so many Michiganders here.

Welcome everyone.
Nice 650 there Kyl3.
Don't think the red is stock, as it's missing the pin stripes, but I could be wrong.

Hey Kyl, nice bike! Mine is red too.
There is a flag relay going on if you want in on it. Streetfighter and I are going to take it from the Canadian border across to Harm in Holland. Feel free to join in the ride if that's your thing.
You too Mullineaux, though you are a bit north. : - )

Hey Guy's-
I'm another michgan kzrider. Went through euro cycle tech school, mostly ducati, but still love my old jap bikes. Have three 650s in the shop and a really nice little 400 for my wife. Anyway have quite a few parts and extra stuff stored, and have been working on 650s for 9 years, If you need help let me know. I'm over in Big Rapids. Dream big build smart!
