Soon to be new KZ owner. Questions?
14 May 2012 19:03
Hey guys. New to the forum and purchasing a KZ by the end of the week.
Have big plans for the bike (swingarm and front end swap to start) and Ive been spending the last few days on here checking out other people projects etc so I know exactly what Im getting myself into.
Heres my first big qeustion.
What would you guys feel comfortable paying for a 77 kz1000 ltd. The thing is mint, minus it has sat for 4 years in a heated garage and needs a carb job. Almost so mint that I feel bad tearing it apart and converting it, but thats the whole purpose I want the bike to begin with.
Its my buddies dads bike, 12xxx miles, he bought it brand new. Always garaged.
He said he would let it go for $1000. Is that fair considering it doesnt run, probably needs tires(even tho im swaping them regardless)
Not too familiar with the prices these older bikes go for. Also I dont want to offer him less than that and feel like a jackass for low balling him since he is a good family friend.
What do you guys think?!
Thanks,
Jordan

In a heartbeat! Worth every penny of it and then some. Now, If you do decide to modify it, please keep the parts you take off safe somewhere. They are worth something right now but will be worth more later. As for modifying, the Ltd is a good choice, it isn't real collectible or sought after therefore not fetching the big money so your not loosing value customizing it. Congratulations on your find!

A good price, but you'll need:
1. New tires as the old ones are probably cracked and dry.
2. New SS brake lines, as the original rubber ones are cracked & dry.
3. New rubber carb boots(the rubber tubing from the air filter box to the carbs).
4. New carb holders(between the engine and carbs).
5. Inspect the gas tank for internal rusting.

I am with Ed as well. They are only original once. If this is a mint bike as you say, buy it, flip it, and then find a suitable not so mint patient to modify to your liking.

thanks for the input guys. went and looked at it tonight and basically the only thing i see that really needs replacement is the seat is separated at one part of the stitching. easy to have it re covered. otherwise, its in excellent shape.
I think I am going to do exactly what ed has suggested because I really want something that I can customize without feeling bad about.
When I get the bike when he gets back from sales later this week ill post up some pics!
