KZ1100 new owner... help please!!!
12 May 2012 00:34 - 12 May 2012 00:34
So... as it turns out no good deed goes unpunished.
I was helping a buddy clear out his father's garage when we came across his 83 KZ1100. It was thought to have been sold a long time ago but as it turns out it just got lost in the back of the garage. I asked him what he wanted to do with it and to make a long story short he left the bike in my truck as a payment for helping him move.
So now I have a 1983 KZ1100 that I have no clue about.
It has probably been at least 2-3 years since the bike has been run. Besides the normal cleaning the carbs, changing plugs, new gas, new battery and an oil change what else should I be looking at before I try and start this thing?
I am halfway decent around a motorcycle and can most things with a little direction. I am not sure if I am looking to go crazy with this bike as I have 2 other bikes that run just fine. I thought this could be a cool project.
any thoughts on common conversions for wheels, forks and suspension?
thanks for any and all help,
Jake

First, get a shop manual:

www.repairmanual.com (Use # 99924-1026-03 for Kawasaki 1981-2005 Kz/Z1000 Factory Service Manual)
www.manualsnmore.com
www.midwestmanuals.com/
www.books4cars.com/
www.repairmanualclub.com/motomanuals/

www.e-classicbike.com/
Here's a PDF download, but it's been reported as having problems:

Look inside the gas tank for old gas or rust, both will have to be removed before trying to start the engine. I'd suspect new tires will be needed, brake systems flushed, and all rubber vacuum lines inspected for cracks. The carb boots(the rubber tubing from the air filter box to the carbs) probably need replacing along with the carb holders(between the engine and carbs).
I'd remove the sparkplugs (13/16" sparkplug socket) and squirt in each cylinder a tablespoon of Marvel Mystery Oil, & re-install the plugs, and let sit for a few days.
