New owner of old drag bike in South Georgia

I just found a 1978 KZ1000A, apparently used as a drag bike in the past. There are wheelie bar mounts on the extended stock swing arm. I have very little confirmed history on this beast. It has been stretched 4" and lowered 2", 4-1 header, no turn signals or gauges, electronic ignition, spade fuses. That's about all I know for sure. PO said he was told it was bored to 1150 or something close to that but not positive. It runs very well. I just have nothing to compare it to to know if internal mods have been done.

It needs a few small things like rear brakes, turn signals, rear tire and a speedometer to be on the road. It will surely be a great ride for tooling around town. The paint job will be completely changed.

I will have lots of questions concerning compatibility of parts, etc and other mods.

Hello, fivestring, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Thanks for the welcomes. Ramtough, your build is inspiring to me.

I am already befuddled about replacing rear tire, but I will try to find the appropriate forum to post.

Looking forward to the repairs, mods and RIDES!

Oh, first question...do I have a kz1000, kz1000A, A2A, ??? Not really sure what differentiates..

Thanks for the kind words
Z1E has a search by model and it lista the vin for A2 and A2A not sure of the differences
there were alot of emission changes around 78 thinking maybe A2A is a california model but I have no basis for that I am sure one of the more versed KZ owners can enlighten us mine is an A2A according to Z1E

Well 7 months and countless garage hours and a few bloody knuckles have passed. She has been transformed into a hardtail bobber. It's kind of an odd combination to me, the relaxed styling of the solo seat and upright riding position with an open header and a snarling monster of a motor. Best of both worlds, I guess. Easy cruising with the option of lighting up anytime I feel the need.
Also an unusual combination of Japanese bike and a military theme. One thing's for sure. There's not another one just like it anywhere.:)
