New in Indiana

Just managed to score a free bike! It's a KZ and 900cc's, not sure on the year yet. Father-in-law picked it up about 10 years ago to teach my wife and brother-in-law to ride. Never really put much time into it as he had other bikes to ride and they didn't take much interest.

Been sitting in an enclosed trailer for probably 7 years... He said I'm welcome to come pick it up if I'm interested. Plan to do that ASAP. I'll post some photos once I've got it home. Need to make space in the garage first.

I'm sure I'll have technical issues to deal with. I'll try to find the appropriate spot to post those questions. Hope to pick the brains of you KZ experts when the time comes.

Thanks in advance...
Luke

Welcome! Sounds like a good deal getting a free bike for marrying his daughter. I'm in Fort Wayne if you're close and need help with anything.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Got just a little more information, the bike is a '75. Already ordered the Clymer manual. I'm hoping this has got to be easier to fix up than my old T140D, but I could be wrong. We'll see...

Still no pics, bike hasn't made it out of the trailer yet. I'll try to get that done as soon as I can free up some garage space.

I'm in the Haute, Terre Haute for all you other hoosiers.

Thanks again, I'm sure you'll be tired of me asking questions before things get road-worthy.

Good to know there are other KZ riders nearby.

Now on to the bad news...

Just picked up the bike last night, and man is it rough! The paint is virtually gone from the top of the tank, almost looks like bare metal!?!? Oxidization has taken over the engine case/jug. Seat and exhaust appear to be non-stock items. I was going to be searching for a passenger backrest anyway. Not ideal, but this will work. Bike has 17,xxx miles and a bad front brake master cylinder.

Haven't had a chance to do anything with it, just brought it home last night. I took one side cover off because there was a grommet missing and I didn't want to lose it on the way home.

Enough with the explaining here she is...

Sorry, the photos suck. Used my phone this morning on my way to work. Didn't have time to let the lights in the barn warm up completely. Obviously lots of work ahead of me, and I don't think it'll ever be a collector bike. Any ideas on the make of the exhaust? No obvious markings, just black.

Congrats! A diamond in the rough, looking very restore-able with some TLC, and soon be sittin' pretty.

Would start with careful pressure wash, and after dry, douse entire bike with Armoral for overnight soak.

Would consider soda blast for initial clean-up on engine and other metal parts.

Good Fortune! :)
