New Rider and owner of KZ750 1977
04 Jul 2011 02:49
Hey Guys,
First wanted to say hello as I've been using the site to learn about the bikes.
I finally pulled the trigger and bought a bike. I've wanted one for a long time and the summer was just too good to pass up riding. I am a new rider (though familiar with dirtbikes and other small engines) and working on building my skills on the road.
The bike i purchased is a 1977 kz750. It's in decent shape, but will need new mufflers, or a whole new exhaust at some point. There are some rust holes in the outside now. But other than that (and a scratches) the bike is great.
Question- what rpm would be recommended for basic cruising around the city? talking 25-30 mph. I know that alot of street bikes like to be in the 4k and up range, but what about these twins?

Welcome vandenbusschebr.
Peak torque is between 3000 and 3500 rpm. This is 3rd for about 30 mph at the low end of this range.
Good luck,
Jim

Hi Vandenbusschebr, welcome aboard! Post some pictures of your new wheels.
I strongly recommend taking the MSF Basic Rider course. It's amazing how many little details you'll pick up, even if you're a lifelong rider. Most states it's free and it class itself is pretty enjoyable, so win-win.
Get yourself a factory service manual and you'll be on the right track for sure!
