Hi guys. Been hanging around a few days... getting ready to put the finishing touches on an 81 KZ1100 A. My 1st rodeo with a Kaw and with anyting with a shaft. Had dozens of Yamahas, Suzukis, and Hondas over the past 40 years or so.

Think this one's gonna be pretty sweet. It's 100% stock for now, but I'm thinking a little cafe-ing up might be fun.

Look forward to seeing what you all are doing to keep these things running and picking your brains for advise.

Ride safe.

Hello and welcome to KZR. These are some of the best classic bikes you can own. They are great weather you keep it stock or decide to hot-rod it. The shaft is a sweet ride. HOWEVER since you are here, there is ONE QUESTION we FORBID you from asking, That question is; "What would it take to convert this bike to a chain drive?" The reason I mention this, is because it comes up quite often. Much more than it should, and it always turns out to be a very prolonged NO! You have a great shaft drive bike so keep it that way. And you can't change the final gear ratio very simply either. ;)

Think you're right about the shaft. I've put a couple thousand miles on this one since last June. I'm not a speed freak or racer dude, and I really like the smooth, quiet performace. Don't think I'm going to miss adjusting and lubing chains. Any wise tips on what to look for as far as trouble spots or maintainence techniques with the shaft?

Thanks in advance.

I put synthetic oil in the final drive. Then near the swing arm there is a rubber boot, there is an area to grease here on the splines. Otherwise if you pull the rear wheel off, you can check the rear wheel bearings and the Dampers for the drive hub. Its really pretty trouble free.
Did you get a book, or download the pdf service manual?
If not here it is:
