New to the site, just picked up a 1974 all original KZ 900.
The neck # is Z1F25020 and Motor # is 25123. The bike is not running and im looking into maybe rebuilding or just selling it. If there is anybody that would be interested in a complete bike im going to chop the hell out of this thing and make it a bobber. Anybody interested in it leave a message. Thanks

I have taken the cams and heads off and the seat is trashed, it was my brothers and it no body has rode it since the early 90's. the frame looks to be in good shape, the pistons are locked up. been sitting overnight with wd 40 about to go out and see if i can get em to move. Its in pretty rough condition but My brother said the engine should still be running. We'll see. I am still not for sure what i want to do with it. If i want to go back to all original or chop the rear end and make a chopper out of it. I was just wanting some ideas. I am not sure what trolling means. I have an 02 harley that I ride daily. Yes it is a z1 900.

I suspect that 'trolling' meant that you were deliberating trying to stir up some negative comments to your suggestion about making a chop/bob out of a Z1A. Most members of this forum might consider that sacrilegious...the Z1 line is considered the holy grail of bike finds and to permanently alter a frame (rendering it unrestorable) is considered bad form. The Z1 line (Z1/ Z1A / Z1B ) are becoming increasingly rare and as such, quite valuable. Bear in mind it is your bike and you can do with it whatever you choose...but most forum members would counsel you to restore the bike (or, at a minimum, not alter the rake or frame and retain the original motor casings...the frame and motor VIN are, in essence, a matched set). Several years ago I saved a Z2A from a fellow who wanted to make a bobber out of it...the Z2A is even rarer than the Z1...I still haven't finished the restoration, but I'm working on it :)

McDroid has it right. My apologies if you are not just trying to stir the pot. It seems that we have had a rash of cheap or free Z1 finds lately. Most times the post goes just like yours with someone saying that they found a 73 74 75 KZ900. Those three years are not KZ900's, they are the more rare and valuable Z1. If you chop a Z1 then you reduce the value to almost nothing when you could be sitting on a bike worth five figures.

I have seen a Craigslist seller in Houston trying to sell a chopped Z1 for about 18 months for $3500 with no luck. If that bike were original restored, then it would be $10K+.

Again, my apologies. You can do what you want with it, but just know that you may be ruining a classic in the process. In fairness, some may say the same about my bike, but it is a run of the mill KZ1000 that might fetch $2000 on a really good day. I would never chop a Z1 if I had one.

Im in lafayette la. And I had no idea the value of the bike in its original shape. I have been looking at this bike for years in the barn, in the garage in the shed, its just been forgotten about. I appreciate the input, ive been looking around since posting this message and it seems like i have a nice project to restore. Any input on what sites to look at for parts or other forums would be greatly appreciated. im a little new to forums, i am on a harley forum and a jeep forum but i dont get on them very often.

By the way I got the pistons to move some..... kind of made me smile a little..... hopefully I can get this thing aprt and get this project rolling. Im not big on looking at something thats sitting in my garage.

Once againg thanks for the input. I wont be chopping the frame.

Here's my first stop for parts: www.z1enterprises.com/default.aspx

You will want to use as many original Kawasaki parts as possible to maintain the highest value. Good luck with your build. Got any pictures? We like to see them when they are barn fresh.

pictures for sure!!! and early on the better...some folks here after doing a welcome aboard post (like you have)...will start a seperate, new post, project thread...a day one photo shoot is a good way to start...take a front and back, top and kneeling shots and a left and right....then folks will know where you are at now and maybe even save you some time and $ by pointing out the strengths and needs you got in this early on...
