Hello from El Paso TX

Hello KZriders,
My name is Carl.
I am now the proud owner of a 96 KZ1000 Police Interceptor. I got it for 400 it does run but needs some TLC with adjusting the carbs, and some wiring and putting the brakes back on. This is my second bike my first was a GS650 that has been sold. I got in running today it will start with the choke and then once warmed up run without. But when you give it any gas it just dies. Any ideas out there? Here are some pics of the KZ. Okay I give up on the posting pics. I will try again later.

I look forward to seeing your bike. You guys who find running bikes for $400 are starting to drive me crazy. I paid that for my bike, and it was a basket case. Where do the El Paso guys go to ride?

Thanks for the welcome and the link. I haven't rode here in a number of years. Ruidoso,NM, Old Mesilla, and Cloudcroft NM are a couple of places here that bikers do ride however. My bike does run but is not road worthy yet. Still need to get the brakes and wiring straight. I am think of just pulling the engine and going thorugh it with a gasket kit and getting a new wiring harness and painting the frame. So it may be a while before I ride it.

Cool man. I figured that you guys would head into NM for the mountain roads. Probably best to get the bike sorted now. It's too dang hot to ride right now anyway. Before you tear into that motor, check your valve clearances, do a compression test, and possibly a leakdown test. Check everything you can, and see if you can get it running right before you decide to tear it down. Do you know the history of the bike at all? Has it been sitting long? If I had to take a blind guess without knowing anything else I would say that you probably have some junk in your carbs. There are lots of possibilities, but I'm speculating that if you got the bike so cheap, that it has been sitting. Just let us know any pertinent info and there are plenty of good folks to help out. Probably best to ask any technical questions in the appropriate section. Make sure to put your model info and location on your signature line so that people will know what model they are advising you on.

welcome...spoke to a motor cop today at some races on a yamaha cruiser cop bike...said he trained at motor school on kawis...said he loved em..the yami cruiser was cheap and reliable though...and the bmw bikes are fickle and have some weak parts ,and, way too much $ to buy in the first place....the kawi was the gold standard - tough and fast...that was a cops take today...welcome

I talked to the local Kawi dealer today and the PD here still runs the KZ's so getting parts is easy enough if I can't find what I need on ebay or CL. I plan on pulling the engine and cleang the frame and painting it and getting a rebuild kit and going through everything and then putting all back together.
