yes, they require a battery to keep the coils powered for operation + spark.

Change the oil+filter first. These old girls need thick clean oil to keep em' quiet and calm :laugh:

Hey, thanks man....I played around with it last night and hooked up a battery. She popped, but the carbs are pretty trashed. I need one carb body. The threads in the main jet insert are gone. I have parts bike however it's a newer bike. The carbs are different.
Parts carbs are even more trashed to switch 'em all out:(
4 barrel holley....lol.....just kiddin'!
I think I need another parts bike as I also need brake parts 'n stuff...

Hey, Thanks guys! This seems to be a real friendly outgoing bunch of people. I appreciate all the replies. There are more pictures on my profile page however, I don't know how to get to them as I am semi-computer illiterate and my 12 year old genius son loaded them.:huh: I just need to get these carbs dialed in and put back on. It's just been so damn hot, by the time I get home I don't feel like doing anything that doesn't involve cold beer and a/c. 102deg F in the shop today. That's with the doors closed, fans going and office doors open to get some of the a/c out there. THIS SUCKS!!!

Kz 1000 in 1977 starts without battery......and runs good...

You really should google George.If you are related,BPM built killer stuff & you might get the "family discount" For a long time he was in Pinellas Park Fla. next door to MRE but I see he's moved to Brooksville Fla.

Don't run it too long without the battery. You can do damage to your ignition system.

You know, I said it ran ...good... It doesn't run good @ all. it'll run... I chased carb issues re-gapped my points etc...came time to take it home. Wouldn't start with kicker(worn out battery). Got pissed, hooked up the big-bad battery charger/booster...It fired up instantly!!! Now it runs ...good...Got an exhaust leak @ the head I gotta fix, Changed the oil, re-built the rear master cyl. and flushed the front. got brakes!!! Rides good NEEDS TIRES... My first ride on a KZ...I think I will really like it when I put a battery in 2-morrow. I may be in love.....Feels FAST!:woohoo:
