15 Jun 2010 14:44
hi im new here ...just picked up a 77 kz 650...33,000 miles on her ...i rode her for about 150 miles ...no issues at all she ran well ...idled at 1500rpms no problem ....put her away for the night forgot to shut the gas off ....when i fired her up with the choke on she seemed ok til i went to shut the choke off ..when i did she just up and died ...the issue i have is i had to ride her back the same 150 miles to go home ...i had to keep the choke on about a third of the way and she still was wanting to stall on me if stopped at a light .....the guy i bought her from had just had the carbs rebuilt ..and had a few issues with it running a 4 into 1 exhaust ...he switched it back to 4 into 2 ...any suggestions here ????thanks brian

Sounds like you could have some debris in one or more of the pilot jets.
They need to be super shiney clear al the way through.

Hello, Brian, and WELCOME to KZR! ![:) :)](/media/kunena/emoticons/8.png)
We're glad you're here!![:cheer: :cheer:](/media/kunena/emoticons/10.png)
Hoping an in-line fuel filter is fitted.
Dual fuel lines need two in-line filters.
In-line filters are inexpensive and readily available through Z1E, bike shops, etc.
Click > In-line fuel filter from Z1E
Crud or grit already in the float valve may sometimes be successfully flushed out, without needing to remove the carbs.
Crud or grit in the pilot jets as suggested by TeK9iNe, will likely require carb disassembly to access and clean.
Good Fortune!![:) :)](/media/kunena/emoticons/8.png)

Some carbs are fitted with two fuel intake nipples, while other styles have a single fuel intake nipple.
Am thinking the 1977 KZ650 carb has a single fuel intake, which would mean a single fuel line running from the petcock to the carb intake nipple.
The in-line fuel filter should be fitted into the fuel line somewhere between the petcock and carb.
There's an "arrow" on the in-line filter showing direction of fuel flow through the filter.
Good Fortune!

Might consider using Kroil carb cleaner before and during the ride. It's mixed with fuel inside the tank, and sometimes helps clean the carbs internally while riding.
There are several brands of carb cleaner, but Kroil is favored by many folks.
