New Member by the end of the Day? I need help.
05 May 2010 07:02
Guys, I am hoping for a an objective response, though I do understand that this is the kz forum. Short prelude leading up to today's decision: My neighbor has a beat up '79 honda 750four that he is wanting to sell me for $750, but there are too many unknowns. I started thinking, there have to be other brands of reliable 80's japanese bikes that are of better value. I nearly bit on a suzuki gs1000 and it fell through, but now I have found 2 kawasaki's and need to decided bewtween the two. One is a 1982 Kawasaki LTD 750 and the other a 79 Kawasaki KZ 650 SR. Both are in good running and asthetic condition. THe kz has 20K on it and runs and drives well and the ltd has 25k and same goes. I like the styling of the kz better but would prefer the 750 engine size. Any helpful comparing and contrasting that might belp me make my decision? I have ridden my dads 900 sportster for a few years now and don't really know what to expect from this range of kawasaki's. How much will I be disapointed with the 650 engine size as compared to the 750 or 900cc sportster? By the end of the day I will have purchased one of two bikes. Also, the ltd is priced firmly at $1500 and the kz asking $1650 though I am hoping $1500 will do the trick. I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Jon

The 750Ltd & 650SR are both KZs. ![;) ;)](/media/kunena/emoticons/11.png)
I have the 1981 KZ650-CSR which is similar to the 750Ltd.
The 750 has electronic ignition - very reliable. The SR came stock w points ignition, but maybe it has been upgraded (?). The 750 shares parts w the 80-83 750Ltd chain drive & 81-83 650-CSR (fenders, side covers, tanks, exhaust, engine covers, seats, etc) & it probably has many of the same parts as the shaft-drive 750s. Some KZ750-Standard parts can be used as well. Although I prefer the standard styling, I'd lean towards the Ltd - since it's newer & bigger.

Performance-wise, I suspect that the 750 has the Sportster, easily.

750 it is! To tell you the truth I was leaning that direction anyway. Sportser is nice, but it's a 90 and sits really low making rider feel like they are sitting in a recliner while driving. I will post pics upon purchase.
Thanks for the clearification.

LOL not even remotely a fair fight, by the time he taps the 750 into 3rd gear he'll be wondering if the sporty broke down way back there.. provided we're talking the 750 4 LTD..

Here she is. strangely enough this isn't the same 750 ltd that i was hoping to get me hands on this morning. This one has a fairly long scratch/dent in the right side of the tank and the carbs need some messing around with (hopefully not a valve issue etc.) But other than that she starts perfectly and drives great, has no leaks but does some sputtering now and then. $800. Now I need to find the link to carb synchronizing. Thanks for the help. I will be sure to update.
