Hello all. New member, new rider, new(to me)bike. I took the MSF course for new riders and went looking for a starter bike in the 750-800cc range, but I figured I'd jump on the first deal to come along. Well, long story short, the first deal that came along was a 1980 KZ1000st. So much for the 750-800cc starter bike! A friend had one stored at his ex-wife's house, and I suspect he was just tired of hearing about it from her! So $500 cash delivered, he doesn't have to hear about it anymore, and I own a big ole Kawasaki.

The bike has not been started in 15 years, so I have my work cut out for me. Carbs are gummed up, big old puddle of fork and brake fluid under the front wheel, and all the rest of the usual suspects. On the bright side, it's only showing 8946 miles on the odometer, and mechanically, the engine and tranny appear to be fine. I almost passed it up because of the size, but I'm a pretty big guy, and it's only showing 8946 miles on the odometer!

I ran across this site while browsing for info and parts, and have been using the search function extensively. Great site you have here, by the way.

Welcome to KZR...you might also post where you live in your signature as if there is someone close to you, they might be able to assist you. Well, if you are not already handy with a wrench...you will be, if you want this beast on the road any time soon. Nice bike you have there...wish I could fall into a shaftie :) First order of business...if you don't already have it, buy the manual...in order of preference, (1) the Kawasaki shop manual, part number 99924-1016-01 or -02, (2) the Haynes manual, or (3) the Clymer manual. You will surely need a manual and the OEM is the best, but the others will do in a pinch. All these manuals are readily available on eBay (and you'll soon be much friendlier with that site than you ever wanted to be) for reasonable costs.
