I have come full circle
03 Aug 2009 23:53
I'm glad I found this site!
My name is Mark and I have always been an avid motorcyclist. I first “learned to ride†a motorcycle in the mid 70s when my neighbor “taught†me on his KE100. My first bike was a Honda CB360T which I kept for one year. During that time I read all the motorcycle magazines of the day filling me head with “knowledgeâ€. I sold the Honda and bought a 1978 KZ1000LTD. I really loved that bike and over the years changed the appearance until it looked like a Z1R.
In 1991 I sold the KZ1000LTD and bought a Harley Heritage. I did all the things Harley riders do to those bikes. It was a GREAT bike. I also had the good fortune of attending the LAPD motorcycle training course. When I finished I could finally say I knew how to ride a motorcycle. In class we rode stripped down KZ1000 police bikes, and let me tell you the amount of abuse those bikes endured was unbelievable. But all we had to do was pick them up, start them, rev the crap out of them to clear the carbs and ride on. Once again I became enamored of the KZ1000.
Eventually the ’91 Harley Heritage gave way to a 1995 Harley Ultra and then a 2001 Ultra. My many work bikes included a Kawasaki ZX-11 and BMW RT.
In 2007 I started Ride Like A Pro West Coast (the same program that Jerry Paladino uses in Florida) teaching enforcement style riding to civilians. The majority of riders who take the course are cruisers / tourers, the Harley, BMW and Goldwing riders. When one of the riders suggested I offer training bikes I knew just what to get, KZ1000 police bikes. I now have a stable of four KZ1000s in my garage next to the Harley. Those bikes are as fun and dependable as I remember. And since not a whole lot has really changed over the years, working on them is not that different than working my old 1978 KZ1000 LTD. When I need it I have found a lot of technical help and support on the Yahoo Groups KZ1000 Police Bike forum. I’m also looking to get a lot of help and support here too so pardon me if I post a lot of technical questions. I have found a lot of parts on e-bay and Craigs List.
So life has brought me full circle, back to the KZ1000.
Mark
