New Boot - 1980 KZ 1000
23 Jul 2009 12:57
Hello everyone,
I bought my 1980 KZ 1000 E2 Shaft a few months ago and have been lurking around here since then. I decided it was finally time to get a little more involved (i.e. I wanted to ask a question and felt that I should introduce myself first). Don't worry, the question will be placed in the proper technical forum!
Looks like there are a lot of great people around here, and a wealth of knowledge. I'm looking forward to being part of the community. I love the 80's power cruisers (previous bike was a 1987 Honda Magna).
Be safe out there!
I'll attach a picture of my baby...

Splandman - hard to tell from your picture, but do you have a 4 into 1 exhaust? If so, how do you like it? I'm thinking of doing something with my exhaust but haven't decided what yet...

I put a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 on it. I still have the original. I liked the exhaust. Definitely noticed a difference after getting carbs jetted, exhaust and pods.
My friend just laid mine down and scratched up my one year old exhaust though. Don't think it had been down til that.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your bike going down. Is your friend alright?
I may look into the 4 into 1, but I'm holding off for now. It runs really well, and I know if I go poking around in the carbs I might end up spending the next 4 months trying to get it running right again.
I've found it is best to obtain some sort of collateral before letting someone ride my bike (keys to their vehicle or title to their home, maybe both). But I guess everyone has to start riding somewhere, and that usually means on someone else’s bike. I almost crashed my friend’s bike once when I was first learning to ride (still not sure how I didn’t, probably blind luck).

Ya, my friend is ok. Im an idiot though, he had wrecked his own bike a few months earlier. He's not a deadbeat though, he gave me $400 within a day or two to pay for the pipe.
I did not do the carbs myself. I had a local guy do them, I have worked on muscle cars but really don't know a thing about tuning bikes.
Im trying to decide if I should sell mine or tear it apart and rebuild the thing now. I want one with an extended swing arm and everything but I also like this shaft drive. I may need two bikes.

Nice looking shaftie! Maybe you should be the first to convert that shaft to a chain drive - now that's a major project! I've seen the shafts extended too but that has to be nearly impossible to do??
Anyway, welcome and good luck with whatever mods you do.
