hello! new rider on '78 KZ650
26 Mar 2009 10:33 - 26 Mar 2009 14:11
Hello everyone! I just picked up a '78 KZ650 from a guy on craigslist. I have never ridden a motorcycle before and need some help. I think the bike looks awesome and I really dig the cafe look. The guy i got it from put a new electric starter and points on it, new plugs, rebuilt caliper, new brake line and master cylinder, cleaned carbs. However it has no turn signals, or horn. I will take pictures as soon as I get home! - David
are these pins a switch for the brake light? cause it is currently not working.
nd one more question:
how hacked is my wiring?
thanks everyone!

Welcome!
Your first order of business is to get enrolled in the MSF Beginning Rider Course. Get started on the right track and you'll be well ahead of the curve enjoying your 650.
As for the front brake switch, that unit isn't stock as the stock 650s used a pressure switch mounted on the lower triple tree. I'm sure it's possible to wire the switch into the wiring to activate the brake lamp.

the wiring doesn't look hacked up, the pic by the fuse bo look like the connection for a dyna s ignition if im not mistaken, you can wire to the master cylinder for your brake, and the horn should be a easy fix

Welcome.
Nice find.
As mentioned, if the bike is running well, the wiring should be ok.
You can check a stock wiring diagram here in the diagram section:

thanks everyone! my rider course is in may and i picked up the wiring diagram and a repair guide. i will have some time to get the brake light and horn working. i would like to have turn signals but i am used hand signals. i have been riding a bicycle for transport for 2 years now! i thought i would treat myself to a more luxurious way to be carless.

Around here if you use hand signals people think you're playing airplane or flipping the bird. Sometimes they are right. GLuck!
