i know i didnt know that at the time of purchase. i cant afford to buy another bike or frame so i dont have much choice but to see what they can do. why would they convert it to carbs if it was fi?

is there no way of peicing together a vin frm stated information? or using the motor vin?

any tricks on reading numbers and letter through grinding marks i can read parts of them. any ideas of what it should start with? end with?

Early FI bikes were often converted to carbs when the FI failed (for whatever reason)...the ECU was fabulously expensive new (about US$1500) and folks often panicked when their bikes hiccuped.:)

Most motorcycle titles are based on the frame VIN, not the motor VIN and when initially registered, the motor VIN was often not recorded. The records that Kawasaki kept was that a series of frame VIN's was associated with a series of motor VIN's but there was not a one-to-one relationship. Phrased another way, there is no way to tell which particular VIN's are linked, except in a general way. Frame and motor VIN's are also not identical (except in a few very early model Z1's)

Actually, I may chosen my descriptors poorly...I should have said 'engraved' rather than 'embossed'. You actually might talk to a gunsmith regarding reading a filed-off serial number...see how they might do it. Get up on www.zedder.com and follow the internal links to see the frame VIN series for 1982 KZ1000/KZ1100 series.
