Just a suggestion... you don't need to get to reserve or empty to calculate your mpg.

All you need to do is:
1) Fill tank to a know level (you choose).
2) Set your trip meter or record your odometer's start reading.
3) Enjoy riding your bike (this is the fun part).
4) Fill the tank back to that know level you chose.
5) Record the quantity of gas added.
6) Record the final odometer reading.
7) Subtract the start reading from the final odometer reading or record the trip meter reading to get the distance traveled.
8) Divide the distance traveled by the quantity of gas added. The result is your mpg in USA gallons.

If your objective is to know your maximum cruising range including the reserve capacity all you do is:
1) Consult your Operator's Manual for the maximum gas tank capacity in US Gallons.
2) Multiply your tank capacity by your calculated mpg and the result is your maximum cruising range for the type of riding and existing conditions during your test ride.
3) For your usable cruising range use 90% of your maximum cruising range... IMHO.

If I missed the point on your objective just flush the above.

Best of success and post back with your results. :)
