New KZ550 owner , advice welcome! was created by cluelessone
Hi All,

Passed my test literally a couple of weeks ago so a complete newbie to the world of biking and the KZ550. Planning on buying this little beauty (£300) to cut my teeth on and learning the trade so to speak. I'm loaning it off a friend for a while to see how I get on but I've already grown really fond of it, despite the oil leak I noticed yesterday (see engine forum for details!). I think it's an 82 plate but other than that don't really know a great deal about it. Can anyone let me know how to find out what specific model it is?

Anyway, take a look and let me know what you think.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hey Lee!! Welcome to KZR. Nice looking 550 you have. They're great bikes, your going to love it. If you look on the data plate it should say what model it is. To get more info ask in the bike related chit chat forum.:)

cluelessone, welcome to the KZR Nation. Neat looking bike.

Kawasaki.com shows 3 KZ550 models available in 1982, if that is what it is:

www.kawasaki.com/DefaultFrame.aspx?strCo.../VICHOOSEVEHICLE.ASP

At the neck of the bike, typically in the right side there is a serial number stamped in to the metal and for Canada/USA models there is also a I.D. sticker.

Check the first part of the serial number to identify the model at time of manufacture. For example, mine is:

"KZ650B-010xxx"

The "KZ650B" identifies it as a 650 Model B while the following numbers identifies it specificly as as B1.

As you might guess, yours might say "Z550?" where the "?" will indicate the model.

Best of success.

PS
You will want to add your year, model and location to your signature to get the very best responses. ;)
