TWO 1982 KZ 440s was created by Machi
Hey Guys
Newby here. Today I helped a friend go over an 82 440 (must be a D-4) and he bought it for $500. It had been sitting in a garage for 4 years, comes with an 81 just like it ('parts bike', but complete and rolling - we haven't even seen that one yet).
So we plopped a new battery in the 82 an it started right up. Feels a bit gutless but everything works. We'll have the carbs cleaned and the valves checked soon. First we're gong to change the oil and dump the old gas.
My question is - Are the many posts on the 440's here? I imagine you have more than a few resident geniuses and we are anxious to partake of your expert advice.
I'd appreciate any general comments about this model and advice you can give.
I myself have a couple of Yamaha XS 650s and our forum is at

Probably the best specific tip I can give you about a 440 LTD is to make sure your air filter is installed correctly. The 440's are very sensitive in the carb dept. To check it open the seat and lift up on the rear of the filter if it moves upward you have it installed wrong. There is a slot in the bottom of the airbox that the filter must first slide into before you attach it with the 2 screws. This makes a huge difference in how the bike will run. Good luck with your new project.

Gracias, Gringo
We didn't check to see if that slot was fitted correctly, will do asap. The box has one of the mounting holes broken off - right upper corner - and the filter looks a little ratty.
I've also heard that these things are known for carb boot leakage - or is that mainly the pre-82 models?
We won't get this thing to a real mechanic for a couple of weeks - he'll have the skills and tools to check out a lot more.
I appreciate your reply
