so i bought a kz550 some days ago and stumbled upon this place.

the bike needs some tlc but it runs decent, this is my first bike btw. It has pods on it when i bought it so no telling if it was jetted or not. Some friends rode it and think it does not have much power below 3k but i think it may be a 4cy thing. How should i pull thing thing out on a hill without stalling? Rev it up to 3K then slip the clutch accordingly?

I may ride the bike stock for this season then make a cafe out of it before next season. Parts seem to be reasonable but im sure everything adds up.

I noticed that the exhaust is kinda beat on the bike. Battery acid messed up the chrome on the left side and there seems to be some rust where the collector is causing holes. Has anybody made their own cutom exhaust for the bike, such as segmeted elbows welded together?

Welcome, to the site.
What year you got?
I have 2 83 GPZ's and they seem to share most of there parts with the KZ's.
My stock 83 is worthless below 3k rpm's but after 5k it screams to life and will take care of most things on the road. Gets 60mpg.
My modded one(basssini exhaust, Mikuni carbs and pods is great throughout the powerband. Gets 35mpg.
