What is the easiest method of cleaing these grimey engines? I don't want to remove it either.

I've done pretty good with simple green. put it in one of those pump sprayers like you use for weedkiller. you might need to knock off the heavies with a nylon bristle brush. if you still don't think it looks clean enough, use some steel wool and WD-40. on chrome, you can try aluminum foil and wd-40.

Get the engine warm such as riding down to the local self serve car wash. Spray some Gunk, etc, engine cleaner on, let soak if you can for about10 minutes and then use the high pressure wand to remove the crap. Just be careful where you apply pressure on the motor.
