Just bought 1976 KZ900 Ltd
27 Nov 2007 08:45
Hey Everyone, I'm a new member and just bought my 3rd Kaw and if memory serves me correctly there wasn't a whole lot of them built. From the research I've done so farthe vin does match up as a 1976 Kz 900 B1? Ltd. It has been painted cause if memory serves me this bike only came in one color like a candy apple red, correct? It's now blue and I would like to have it painted back to original, anyone know where I could get color codes or samples? Appreciate the help.

Welcome, Bob!
Your subject line got my attention, for sure.
You're right, the 900 LTD came in one color, RED. It's got some striping, and it's not an easy job to duplicate the original paint. Or so my painter told me.
Paint's important if you want to restore it to original, but it's not cheap. You should also check how much of the original eqpt is still hanging on the bike. Some of the original LTD parts are hard to find.
Some pictures would help alot.
Here's what the original paint looked like. It's a repaint, but I think the color is very close to original....

Yeah, that looks real close to the original color. There is one for sale on Ebay right now, its in Mo. and supposedly has only 65-6500 miles on it, and it looks like you can probably eat off it. Mines got a 4 into 1 header which I like, has a lot of non factory chrome(from the looks of it), the engine heads were painted black/dk gray at some point, its got highway pegs w/ low beam fogs on them, its in pretty good shape for being almost 32 yrs old, runs strong. I'm not going to make it all stock, but I will make it a little more that way and a little nicer. Thanks....

No, I haven't gotten that far yet. But I imagine I'm going to need one, I'm looking for a good old school Kaw mechanic also.

Bob:
I'll send you a copy of the Kaw Shop Manual for KZ900 and the LTD Supplement.
Send me a PM with your address, and I'll drop one in the mail.
As for the Center Stand, the LTD model didn't come with one. The story is that the pipes interfere with a center stand, because they run under the engine. But members of this site have successfully installed the center stand, even with the stock pipes.
