Hello from central PA!
20 Aug 2007 08:43
Hello everyone! I just came across this website while I was trying to find some information on my first motorcycle which happens to a be a 1979 KZ750. I have some questions about some things I'm trying to track down, but I'll try to find the appopriate forum for that. I'll get pictures posted as soon as I can, but thanks in advance for any help!
edit: I did just look briefly at some other forum titles and I still have a questions about properly identifying what exactly I have. So far I believe it is a 1979 KZ750LTD. The title says 1979 and the vin says "KZ750B0...". I'm still not completely sure it's correct, so any insight would be much appreciated!

The 4 cylinder 750's were not made until 1980 although the production date can be somewhere after July 79. Most likely what you have is an 80 KZ 750 H-1 if the paint is factory it should be black with gold pinstriping.

It is black with gold pinstriping. And while the title says it's a '79 and the vin # on the title matches the number on the engine, the one exhaust pipe does say KZ750 H-1. I tried looking up the vin # on the Kawasaki site, but there's no record there (I'm guessing because of its age), and when I look for a repair manual, the closest year I can find is 80-85.
Here's my main concern for now: the bike is at a friend's house in need of a new clutch cable. On oldbikebarn.com I've found two cables. One that would fit a 77-79 KZ750B (twin), and another that would fit an 80-81 KZ750H. I'm certain mine a four cylinder, but the different numbers/years are throwing me off. I'm very new with all this and I want to get it back on the road, so I'm torn on which cable I need.

If you want OEM NOS try these guys odds are pretty good they will have it.

If not your local Kaw dealer can probably still get it or Jeff from Z-1 Ent. can probably get you an aftermarket cable from Motion-Pro.

Can you tell if any of these will work?
www.oldbikebarn.com/motorcycle_parts.php...les+-+Clutch&Start=0
The price difference would really help me out right now. There are two on there that look like they would work, but it seems to be a matter of deciding between the 750B or H-1. It's definitely a four cylinder, so I'm assuming the H-1 would work?
(Should I repost this in the "engine" forum?)

The last one on the page should work for you. I think Johnny usually gets $25 for his OEM cables. Myself I'd be inclined to spend the extra $7 and get the Kawasaki cable, I've got 30 year old bikes that still have the original Kawi cables on them that are still working good. With aftermarket cables you kind of take your chances as to quality.

I'm on an extremely limited budget right now and I kind of just want to get something on there to get it on the road so I can ride out the rest of the nice weather for this year. I think in the spring is when I'm going to concentrate on more of the real maintenance.
Seriously, thanks for your help.
