new old zk650!

hello everyone!!

first off my bike i acquired is a 79 kz650. i got it from my uncle who is cleaning up his yard. he drove this bike everyday until he parked it (doesnt remember why) bike had nothing wrong with it when parked roughtly 4-5 years ago...

got the bike home today and the license plate on the back says last registered in 95...12 years lol

ok so everything was froze up to different extents. sprayed wd-40 and pb lube on chain, brakes, levers, wheel bearings (what i can get of them without taking them off), throttle (both ends), etc...

everything moves now except the rear wheel, i dont knwo if the rear brakes are frozen open inside the drum, or if the drive sprocket is still froze. also found the kickstart on the pass side of bike (right side) and kicked it over to see if engine froze, it went really really easily so i removed all plugs and kicked it and pistons not moving. i am assuming that that is a kickstart.

poured atf into cylinders to help free up and re set rings if possible (didnt have marvels mystery oil around)

i have no clue about this bike at all, first motorcycle besides a 86 ninja i had. been riding dirtbikes for 3 years now, rode other peoples motorcycles for a little and work on my own projects for the most part so i had a little idea about wrenching but not much.

tried to check out the kz info links but my internet is acting werid so i couldnt load the page. any info or ideas about freeing up my bike and possibly getting it to start or at least turn over would be awsome! any questions please feel free to ask! thanks!

Welcome to KZr lucky.

Try giving that ol' kickstarter a whirl without holding the clutch lever in, as the lever being held in disengages the kick start mechanism.

I almost forgot, we require pics of your "new to you" bike.

welcome to z-jungle. you will undoubedly have to completely disassemble and clean the carbs before it will run. once you get it to turn over check for spark, and check out all the electrical stuff. most of the connections could probable use a cleaning and som di-electric grease. you may also want to check to see if the mechanical advance is working properly. oh and if you havent done so yet, get a manual!! www.z1enterprises.com should have what you need

Welcome, Lucky.

The 650 is a very popular bike and parts are still quite easy to procure, if a bit expensive at times. Mostly what you will need to do is cleaning and replacing maintenance parts. The fact that you have familiarity with motorcycles will help you a great deal. Once you get it sorted out, you'll have a reliable bike.

oh well thanks about the clutch out info on the kickstart, i would have probibly taken 4 months to figure that out the hard way

ill take pics today and post them up for yall either tonight or tomorrow at some point!

ill have to look into that mechanical advance thing, ill search that tonight or tomorrow

and your absoutly correct about cleaning/rebuilding the carbs, checking electrical, etc and i plan on doing that on the next weekend that is nice and i have time!

--UPDATE--

got the rear tire loose finally, hooked bike up to my 4wheeler and pulled her, but i can only put it in 1st gear so i cant get the engine unfroze that way...i filled up the crankcase with all sorts of oil i found around (engine oil) just to put something in there hoping to unsieze the engine and transmission without me ripping anything apart...

any ideas on safter ways to try and unfreeze the engine without ripping stuff apart..lol im just too busy to rip the engine apart with my newborn and all.

It has been suggested to me before to pour some Marvel Mystery Oil in thru the spark plug holes to free a seized engine. It's available at your local auto parts store probably.

pumps: yeah i knew of that but i didnt have any at the moment so i put atf (automatic tranny fluid) in all the spark plug holes, basically it does the same thing but it still hasnt broke loose yet...hehe

thanks for adding the pics for me!! as for a great looking bike she'll get a good cleaning once i get the motor unfroze, havent had a decent day to pull her around on the wheeler again! i also removed the backrest, gives it a better look in my opinion!
