The Phoenix Art Museum has had an exhibit of some very rare and impressive vintage race cars from back in the '20's to the 70's. Most of these cars I have only seen in the pages of books or vintage magazines!!! Here are a few photos of just a few of the cars that were on display.

The '67 Gurney Eagle-Weslake V12 Formula 1 car. One of the only two American cars with an American driver ever to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The Ferrari 250 GTO 1 of the 36 ever built. Viewed by many to be the most beautiful automobiles ever built!!!! Value between 45 to 60 million dollars!!!!

The Type 35 Bugatti. A race car from back in the '20's. This one has never been restored since in was built back in the '20's!!!!

A Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. The very first Ford powered car to beat Ferrari. 1 of 6 ever made!!!

Hope some of you enjoy looking at some very rare and expensive race cars!!!!

Nice iron....cannot remember where I heard that an English team ran the Daytonas in the manufacturers trophy at LeMans because Shelby had to take care of the GT40s and they were supposed to have been deep -sixed but ultimately were not......probably when I was back in architecture school in England in the late 70's.

Alan Mann Racing from England raced the Cobra, and the Daytona in '64 and '65. They were a Ford Factory team back then. Shelby also raced the Daytona coupes in '64 and some in '65. There was a Swiss team Scuderia Fillipinetti that also raced one in the '65 24 Hours of LeMans. Shelby raced the Daytona Coupe the most in those two years. '66 was the start of the mega-dollar GT40 MK.II program and all the dollars went into that program. Allan Mann Racing, Holman-Moody, and Shelby American all raced the MK.II's that year!!!

Shelby and Ford parked the Daytona's after the '65 season. They sat outside the Shelby plant in California, and they were finally sold for like 6,500 bucks each!!!!! Look how much a Daytona Coupe is worth today$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks Dr. Gamma, great fun looking at those old cars especially the '67 Gurney V-12. That car is most impressive and that style always tripped my trigger back in the day. I always thought that style of Formula car was the best bar none. It looks darn fast just sitting there, half car and half fighter jet. It just screams, "Let's go fast as hell, but with classic style"!

Here are a few more photos I took when I visited the Phoenix Art Museum.

The Indy Roadster is the car that A.J. Foyt drove to victory in the 1961 Indy 500.

A.J. is the ONLY driver to win the Indy 500 in both a front engine car, and a rear engine car!!!!!

The Lotus 38 was driven to victory in the 1965 Indy 500 by Jimmy Clark.

This marked the the very first time that a rear engine car won the Indy 500!!!!!

The Gurney Eagle V12 and the Lotus 38 were both designed by Len Terry.

Here you go Dave. I was surprised that they did not have a McLaren CanAm car in the exhibit!!!
They did have in my mind the ultimate race car ever made......the Porsche 917/30!!!! Flat 12 twin turbo with 1,200~1,500 HORSEPOWER!!!!
Found you a photo of the '69 McLaren M8B with Bruce at the wheel.

I am kinda partial to the '70 M8D that was driven by my boyhood hero Dan Gurney. If it wasn't for that Castrol oil patch on his drivers suit he would have been the '70 CanAm Champion!!!!!
