I have a fairly inexpensive Canon SX710HS camera that I have owned for a few years. It has a built in 30 power optical zoom feature. I’ve used the zoom feature many times, but I had never done a comparison between maximum zoom vs no zoom. However, a couple weeks ago I had a good chance to do so.

The first picture below shows a no zoom photo. The second image below is that same photo expanded to the max on my PC. In the second image I have drawn a yellow box around a road sign. Notice it is unreadable; in fact one can hardly tell that it is a road sign. The third image below shows a photo of that the same road sign taken from the exact same position as the first two images but with the zoom on the camera turned up to the max. I was impressed by the difference. Ed

  No, I realize the 1,200 foot elevation is not very high. Several years ago I hunted on Silver Mountain in Colorado, and the elevation there was more than 10,000 feet. At the time my cubicle at work was on the tenth floor of the office building we were in, so in preparation for the hunt I used the steps rather than the elevator for about 2 months. At first doing the steps was difficult, but over a couple weeks it became less challenging. When I got to Colorado I was really glad I had prepared myself, because the air at 10,000+ feet is noticeably thinner than at sea level. Using the steps had really helped. Ed

When we camp out West it's usually at around 8,000 + and that will wack you after a week or so.
We already reserved camping near West Yellowstone for next year, this time we will be just below 7,000 hope it helps.
