Can you chop a chrome fender? was created by hat0791
I was wondering, how dificult would it be to cut down the front fender on my '79 1000ST?

It has the big stock chrome fender, and I'm going for somthing a little more cafe' styled.

Any suggestions?

How about, swapping fenders with the shorter LTD type and keep your current fender in case you want it later. The short LTD front fenders look great.

Yeah, thats a nice looking front fender you have there, I'd keep from cutting it.

Are they chrome? I cant tell.
To answer your question. Yes you can chop a chrome fender, I havent tried but have seen a couple of bikes here that have. I imagine with the right cutting tool it isnt that difficult.

I''m thinking of doing mine and painting it flat black like the rest of the bike. If I do I will take pictures and post them.

Yes you can, I did mine. I cut it with a die grinder and cutoff wheel and finished with a file and sandpaper to get to final shape and remove sharp edges. This is the important part,if you are going to paint it, then bead blasting with glass media to rough up the surface so the primer and paint will stick is a must. If you are leaving it chrome then I would do all the cutting with hand tools (hacksaw, file) as not to overheat the metal in the area around the cut and cause the chrome to turn blue or flake off..The edges will have to be touched up with paint so they won't rust.. Hope this helps

here is what I did with my stock chrome fender. I have built a bobber style bike so this is probably not what you are looking for but I thought it was easy to do.
