Gas tank cleaning? was created by yeperra
This is my first post here at the site. I read a post somewhere about a guy who cleaned light rust inside his tank using acid with small nuts inside and used some other liquid to coat the metal inside to prevent rusting. I'm not talking the cream stuff it was some chemical conversion process. Anyone have any ideas or know of the artical? I just can't find it, and it sounded pretty good.

After hydrochloric acid + nuts, anything containing Phosphoric acid. This creates a layer of Iron Phosphate on the steel and prevents rusting.

www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html read this I have cleaned several tanks(4) this way seems to work well, it took several days and I had to keep cleaning off the electrode from rust build up, I used a 10 amp battery charger.

First, welcome!
Second..... I have done both the electrolysis and phosphoric acid methods (last year). These methods both worked well in removing rust, as long as there is no "gunk" in the tank. If there is any gunk, like gummed-up fuel or whatnot, niether method will work, and the the gunk will actually protect the rust underneath it from the acid or electrolysis.

This winter I am going to try the BBs in the dryer method. I've read other riders have such great success with no chemicals and mess. And it cleans everything in the tank, not just rust.

Hey yeperra,

I tried the electrical method but couldn't really tell if I was accomplishing anything.

Why don't you read my article in the "Articles" section. I believe it's called "Rusty Tanks".

Good Luck

WOW! Thanks for all the help guys. This is the best forum I'v ever posted in. I now beleive I have enough information to really make a mess. I'm going to read up on all this and try to make a decision. As soon as I get my frame back and start the rebuilding I'll put up some pictures.

Thanks again!

Evapo-Rust looks like light duty only stuff from the reviews I've seen. $20+ a gallon for it is what I'm hearing.

OKC's way will work, give it a try.
