mirrors: is there a secret? was created by Bicycle Lee
so I got a new pair of mirrors for my bike and they look great...only problem is I can't tighten them as far as I need to...and if I loosen them to where I can see, they're way too loose. Any secret?

I'm guessing you are talking about screwing the mirror stud into the bars. If so, try screwing a thin nut onto the mirror stud then screw the stud into the mount. When you get close and have the mirrors adjusted where you want them then tighten the nut against the mount.

If you have new mirrors you should already have an adjustment nut on them. With the mirrors off the bike try unscrewing the nut with a wrench while holding the mirror shaft. Once you have it loose re-install the mirror and then use the nut to lock it down to the desired position.

I don't get the comment regarding tightening the mirrors and seeing out of them. I guess what you are asking is how to get the mirrors in position and tight. I think folks have explained that in that you just put the 10mm mirror in the 10mm thread and screw it in... You don't tighten the mirror in the socket you just screw it in to where it seems to stop then turn it back to where you can see and then use the lock nut to tighten the mirror.

If your mirrors buzz when riding, JC Whitney sells a chrome and rubber device that screws between the mirror and handlebars. It has a rubber insert that helps reduce the vibration in the mirrors.

It has been my experience that the JCW inserts don't help. To reduce buzz, get convex mirrors. Also, better mirrors are mounted in their shells with more isolation and seem to not buzz as much. In the denniskirk.com catalog, there are generic replica mirrors. These buzz big time. There are Sean (can recall mirrors) and Napoleon mirrors and both of these are far superior. I have both types.

I figured it out...having bought older mirrors, the screw end was stuck. I just lubed it up a little and got them to spin and solve my problem.

JC Whitney rubber never helped mine. I now buy Napoleon also. In fact my Triumph has Bar-end Naps and are very clear. I thought for sure they were going to be buzzy being so far out on the bars but the are my clearest mirrors.
