Duplicolor rattle can was created by Sputnic81
Hey all. I am working on my 82 440 LTD. I have read several posts on here about using the Duplicolor rattle can on the tank and various other parts. I am going straight black with mine and I finally finished all the prep work and got my first coat of color laid down.

Has anyone else noticed that this stuff is EXTREMELY thick. I was holding the can about 4 inches off the tank and I still got some nasty orange peel.

The stuff that I got has the ceramic additive and it says it is fuel and oil resistance and will withstand "intermittant temperatures of up to 500 degrees."

Has anyone else used it and if so did you find a way to get a good finish? I am thinking a lot of elbow grease, 2000 grit paper and polishing compound.

I think you were too close to the part you were painting. I believe the directions say 8-10 inches.

Back up from the piece a wee bit and try moving quicker as you spray. From my experience, spraying THAT close I'm very surprised you didnt end up with runs and sags and such. Good news is orange peel CAN get sanded out.....;)

Might ned to use coarser than 2000 ghrit, though. Orange peel isn't that easy to get out, even with 1000, if it's thick. You probably need to sand through a bit of paint anyway, if you held the can 4 inches off.

The reason I was so close was that I was getting awful coverage and finish at the greater distance. On the plus side, I am now two coats down and may put on a third. I got through my trouble areas with a little 800 grit and then worked out with the 2000. Just for s***s and grins I polished out a little spot with the compound. Wow!!! That stuff takes a shine very nicely. I hope that the metallic will take as well as the straight color did.

I will post pics as soon as I can get some decent weather. Wife doesn't like me to paint in the garage.

Rip, I feel your pain about painting in the garage. Can't wait to see the pics. I have used the paint, high temp paint, flat black paint and anything that is made to withstand any type of heat is going to be thicker than your basic paint.

Don't Buff on metallic spray paint. It will make a mess.

I read a tip somewhere that said if you're painting with spray cans, buy a bunch of extra tips. Look at the spray opening with a magnifying glass and pick the best tip. I guess quality control isn't so hot on these tips....

if your looking for shine put 6-10 coats of clear over it.
