I had a few spots on my frame that were rusty/peeling. I wire brushed, sanded, and primed the spots, and then painted with CHEAP ($1.99/can) rattle can paint from Do-It Center. Gloss Black. I masked with tape, paper towels, and old sheets. I used grey primer, also from the Do-It Center.
I thought that the cheap paint would last about a month, but it's been two years now, and it still looks great. Didn't do the whole frame, just touch-up. But I honestly can't tell where I painted, and where it's original.

I used engine enamel and baked it on in the sun (I'm in Cali). It holds up really well to oil and fuel and there's some decent colors available. I can check on the brand later if you want, I have a couple of cans left.

I painted mine 12 years ago with good ol rustoleum, once it dried it was hard as rocks. Sanded first, then rustoleum primer, than 3 coats of the final color, (red on my frame) Light #0 steel wool between coats 1 and 2. Wait as long as it says on the can or longer to be completly dry between coats. Fuel/brake fluid proof too, seems like..
It's still in pretty good shape, but this winter it'll get powdercoated....

Duplicolor engine enamel with ceramic. Super glossy, very durable. Lay it on wet, but be careful of runs. It does dry fast. I've painted a number of parts with it including my back wheel, plus a Santa Cruz mountain bike frame.
Also, John Deer lawnmower paint has a reputation for durability according to Goblin who used to frequent here.
