Wheelhop,
In the very first photo, I can see an unusual arrangement for the HT cables on the right hand side of the engine. Is this something that you added on? Interested to know what it is.

On the tank; I once had a tank painted, and after a while, rust streaks started coming from behind the strip of metal welded in to hold the badge. Paint hadn't fully penetrated around the back of it and it rusted. I was fuming! If the tank hasn't been painted yet, how about flooding the strip and the space behind it with epoxy, stop any water getting in there? Just a thought.

Ian

Mr. Ian-B,
I think those cables you see are coming out of right side of engine is an ARD Magneto distributor and those are spark plug wires.  I have removed that system off of this bike and sold it to a worthy fellow enthusiast on this site.
As far as the tank rusting behind the emblems, I will take that into consideration and discuss with the painter.  I doubt if it will become an issue as this bike may only see rain on a fluke occurrence.

Tell me more about chemical stripping?  Did you have it coated with anything or is it just raw steel?  I was trying to read up on e-coating directly after chemical stripping.  I can't find many places that do both.

As for paint, I recently had a very good conversation with the Dana from WFO Custom Paint.   www.facebook.com/WFOCustomPaint/

I haven't had anything painted yet, but he posts lots of photos of his work and I came away with a good impression after our phone conversation.  If anyone else here has worked with WFO Custom Paint I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Did you ask Ralph if he was still painting parts?  Or is he only selling paint now?

I am no longer set up for painting, but I am working with a local painter to spray 73's since you can't buy decal kits for that year.
I believe WFO 76 green and brown are not tri-coat candy colors, but standard base coat metallic type car colors.

Got the tank, side covers and tail back from "The Paint Spot" in Addison IL yesterday.  Very happy with the result.  I think it took about a month total but part of that was getting the decals/stripes to him and then finding out there was a defect in the first set, so a second set was shipped to me quickly by Z1Parts.net.
Here is a few pics:

Nice Job! Your painter might get some work now from interested members!
Nothing like fresh clearcoat!
I'm working on a set of parts, ready to wet sand, but 64 yr. old arthritic hands are not looking forward to it! But I will!   Beer and pain meds help!
Nice quality high build urethane primer, have the 2 metal fenders in the garage curing.
I love painting, as I wrote in the past, it's a Zen thing, you get into the zone, tune everything out, crank up the music! And after you lay that last layer of clear coat on! Come back in after it sets up and stare at the virgin clear, nothing has touched it yet!
Something only a painter knows!
Chime in Ralph! You know what I mean!

Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.
I SOLD OUT! THE KAW BARN IS EMPTY.
More room for The Old Girl, Harley 75 FLH Electra Glide,
Old faithful! Points ign. Bendix Orig. carb.
Starts everytime!

Thanks for the compliments.  It's a nice day in Illinois and I will try to take a few pics of the tank in the sunlight and post later today.

76 looks good Wheehop!

I got burnt out on doing stock paint jobs, but visualizing custom color layouts and then seeing the final results is rewarding for me!
