Cracked side panel ?

My left side panel on my 77' KZ1000A has a 2 inch vertical crack at the bottom of the panel. I was thinking about using a length of fiberglass matt on the backside of the panel then using a resin and harder ?

How are you guys repairing your cracked panels and are the repairs working good ?

I've made similar repairs using fiberglass cloth and slow dry two part epoxy glue. Before beginning, sand patch area inside cover to remove the paint in the area around the crack. Mix epoxy, flex side cover to open crack, force epoxy into crack using something like your finger in a latex glove, lay down fiberglass patch over crack from inside cover where it won't show and laminate in place using epoxy. Several years in and the repair is holding up perfectly.

I use ABS glue and fiberglass now just like I would use resin. The resin loses it's bond under stress.

I have used a superglue with " special" powder. works a treat and no requirement for fibreglass. Mate did an 8 piece repair to the front 4" of a mudguard and you cannot see it after painting

Nessism, What do think about using Plastic Weld from J-B Weld ?

I used some of that JB recently in the clear version to cover an unwanted hole in a front fender. I added some fiberglass window screen on the second coat in behind and it is holding great.

Saw on a Video that it looked like it worked well on cracked panels.

It seems like JB Weld Plastic Weld doesn't come in a "clear" version ?

Sorry, but I have no experience with that stuff. Most likely fine. I'd do some more research before trying it though. I used 3M DP460 epoxy.

That stuff says it works on ABS and it looks very similar to a 2 part product I used on a side cover years ago.
I am not using the same side cover now but it never failed in around 30,000 miles of use.

I would clean the panel.
Drill a small hole a the end of the crack.
Use a dremmel and create a small ditch along the crack on the inside of the cover.
An even smaller ditch on the outside.
Sand down .ca 1cm on both side of the crack.
Use a plastic welder and melt on a appropriate strip.
Let I cool
Sand the inside, reinforce with a small patch of fiberglass.
Fill the ditch on the outside with bondo and sand.

Talk to autopanel repairman, they are good at this nowdays as their is not a lot of sheet metal in a car now days.
