PJ1 paint

If I plan on using PJ1 gloss black frame paint on the frame and wheels. How many cans should I order if I plan on using it for both the frame and rims? There very expensive, so I'd like to make sure I buy the correct amount of more.

It would depend on how many coats you want/need to apply. If youre going to undercoat everything first,that should give you a good idea of how much you would use to cover everything. Work it out from that.

I used PJ1 Fast Black gloss on my Z1, it's closer to semi gloss if anything. I started restoring another Z1 and used VHT rollbar paint, it has a little better shine to it but not obnoxious like Rustoleum.

Oh, and IIRC PJ1 you do not use a primer so don't. If you do use a primer use PJ1 primer and make sure it's black.

The frame needs to be sanded down and or sandblasted. If I leave rust on some on the welds where I can’t sand it off is that going to affect the finish?

So, say 3 cans of pj1 for the frame and 3 for the wheels?

I’d rather have to much than to little.

I’ll start with the frame first. Then I’ll see how durable it is, and then do the wheels later.

As long as it's only surface rust it shouldn't matter, Some wire plumbing brushes work well for cleaning the tight spots. blasting will make the metal more porous and the paint will stick better.

That sounds about right for the paint.

the VHT chassis rollbar paint is that gloss or satin black

If it’s striped down, have it grit blasted
and satin black powder coated.
I think you’ll be much happier then super-super thin paint delivery from a spray can.

I would buy 1 can first and see how you get on with a wheel or something first, I bought 3 cans which 2 were gloss black and the other semi gloss , the latter went on smooth and even but using the gloss was a disaster, no matter what I did prior to the spray application , warming the can , shaking till my arm fell off the thing would start to clog and spit out paint spots ruining the job I wrote to the manufactures ages ago about the problem I was having with the gloss application and still waiting for a reply

it's just for touch up and I never saw anything powder coated I liked.

I have 60,000 miles on a VHT roll bar paint job (satin) it could use some touching up but over all it has held up real well.
We try to avoid rain and she lives a pampered life at home.

I think I used 4 cans to do the frame and swing arm, you can get a couple extra cans and return what you don't use.
You need to keep going with this paint , they say to "give it 2 light coats and then a medium coat before 1 hour."
I think I may have given it a couple more coats.
It has a slow cure time so don't use it if your in a hurry, or be very careful.
