Looking for codes, and for info on modern paint options, not lacquer. Trying to restore to original color, or as close as possible.

These folks may be able to help. They do a lot of KZ paint jobs, and they also sell paint. Ed

There is an eebbaayy seller who lists vintage Kawasaki colors, but I don't know if they have Luminous Navy Blue. I stumbled upon them when looking for Sundance Blue (it is a PPG DBC Base Coat Clear Coat Application. color only). In the description he says they have other vintage colors & there are some links that show a number of paint sets they've supposedly completed. I don't know anything about the seller, though.

eebbaayy search = sundance blue paint

Maybe Ralph from Paintworks will chime in here, but the colors were not a simple code I don't believe. They did a basecoat, then added the color. I know on the 79MKIi in red, I was able to buy exact Kawasaki paint right through Kawasaki, the can said Kawasaki and everything on it. That being said, without the correct basecoat process, the paint did not match. Close enough from 100ft to paint a quarter fairing though.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Agreed. The stock Metallic Regal Blue paint on the KZ650-C1 was the result of a 4 step paint process. It had Special Silver Basecoat; Flake Siiver Basecoat; Brigade Blue; and Clear Topcoat. Most other KZ's were a 3 step process. Nearly all of them had 2 different color coats followed by clearcoat. Ed

I was pretty sure it wasn't simple, that's why I asked. The bikes that I've had to paint so far were non-metallic, except my GSXR racebike, which I didn't care so much about. I'd like to do a really nice OEM job on this one, complete with the stripe kit.

No help probably, but Tony posted a picture a few years back, and said where he got his painted and it looks real close to me.
Here's the picture. Tony died a couple years back. kzrider.com/component/joomgallery/kz-100...-kz1000-a3-mk11-4515

I do not have any info on the 79 Mark II colors, but if it is called Luminous it most likely was a Tri Coat color like the 78 Luminous colors I sell are.

So if you want it to look right you need to use a Tri Coat system, which is a base color, a mid coat flake, and a candy top coat.

The other guy selling paint on eBay seem to sell mostly base coat clear coat metallic colors that are supposed to match the original Tri Coat Candies. A metallic paint will never be a good match for a Candy color....especially if you have to park next to an original paint bike at a show.
