Plenty of painters can do that, but it is time consuming and expensive.

It is more a technical problem just applying laying out the shapes with vinyl tape and blending the paint, you don't need any arty skills to do it.

That is a nice job, good colours and the blue really makes the flames pop. Look how smooth the curves and points are with no evidence of back taping.

i would bet the blue lines are freehanded with no tape.

Yes, blue was put on by a hand pin stripper. Some people clear over stripes, some don't. I did these Harley Superglide tanks many years ago, I had my friend stripe the red. I clear them. These were in the middle of a re-clear, after 12 years. gas got to them, from a leaky cap. I like simple flames. I don't over lap them. Black always looks good with flames. As long as they have good flow lines. I have seen so many bad tape jobs, I would be embarised to have on a tank!
Good luck, find a good painter, hopefully someone you know. This stuff ain't cheap.

Very nice! Dad and his buddy did airbrush flames on an old car years ago, so I know it can be done. I was a very little kid at the time, but I remember running my hand across the flames after they were done.

I'd like to paint a tank tie-dyed. Would that be a similar technique?

...after 12 years. gas got to them, from a leaky cap. I like simple flames

I always leave a good margin around the gas cap and fuel tap to avoid petrol getting between the paint layers.

Back taping is the easier way to do it than hand pin-striping. An indication of minimum cost, a friend of mine did a custom flame job with some basic stencil airbrushing on a cruiser bike for £600, the steel and plastic were in good condition to start with.

+1 on the hand striping. I did the flames on the VT below, but I don't have the talent to stripe by hand, so I taped the edges. I cleared over the tape, and once it was sanded and buffed it was almost smooth, but still obviously tape. Paint looks SOO much better.

Man Pete! That cycle is looking good! 1st time I have seen some quality pictures!
Could be a cycle of the month candidate!
Clean & nice detail! Chrome always helps too!
But I just sprayed this mini bike Monday with 16 year old medium Blue Ford color. White and blue theme going. I used 25 year old pinstripe tape. Pulled about 4-5 feet off. Warmed it in microwave a few seconds to warm the glue! And it worked perfect. Taped over the white, sprayed the blue, then cleared it with urethane clear coat,

4:1 cheap clear.

Here's a better picture, I got a lot of compliments from some old Harley guys that had 900s & 1000s back in the day before they became Harley guys, at the 100, 105, & 110th year anniversaries up in Milwaukee, they'd tell me they wish they still had them, B)

Same here in my old hood! All the old Harley guys, (older than myself) I'm 57. They all had the Z1-KZ. so they could beat on them.
That's what got me started! They were painted black, lowered with Hog wheel and had a 4 into 1 header
And the mini fender! The front has dimples were it fits around the front forks. They are supposed to be there. I'll shot a pic when it is done.
Gonna put it together after this weekend. Then put some time in on the Z-rod.
