Tank Differences - 1996 to 2002 KZ1000p was created by The Nomad
Hey folks,

I've got a chance to get my hands on a non-dented tank from a 1996 KZ1000p to replace the dinged one on my 2002. I've checked the parts numbers for both years on Bike Bandit and they're different. The 2002 is 51082 and the 1996 is 51001. I can't imagine they are THAT much different and I'm guessing the part numbers don't match because the paint scheme changed between those years. My question is, does anyone know if I'll have any fitment issues between a 1996 and a 2002 KZ1000p?

Thanks in advance!

Can you get the seller to send you some pics top, bottom, front and back?

Best I could get was a shot of the top. The shape is identical, but the paint is different.

I bet they're interchangeable. You can compare the frames & tank fittings n stuff, but I'm pretty sure the Police bikes are all pretty much the same from 1982-2005. not completely identical in some cases, but very similar.

Part numbers. bikebandit does not provide the full part numbers. The numbers you listed are the diagram reference numbers. Partzilla & PowerSportsWarehouse are a couple of sites with the full part numbers. The diagrams at Kawasaki.com are incomplete for some models, but the Kaw site has the full part numbers for many models.

Booya!

Got it anyway, and for just about nothing. For some insane reason the previous owner had painted the door to the tank. I think I'm going to strip the whole thing down and repaint it. Not a ding on it anywhere. Anyone know how to get ALL the gas out? I had the petcock open for a while and I think a little is still in there. I kept shaking and turning it, but for some reason, it wasn't draining.

Ive got some welding to do on my tank,so Im interested in getting not only the fuel out but all the fumes as well.
First up, i drained it as best as I could then I plugged the fuel sensor hole and the petcock hole. I threw some dishwashing liquid in and put the garden hose in it ,flushed it out a few times then let water run through it for an hour. I unplugged everything ,let the water drain out and let it dry out and breath in the sun. Seems ok but Im going to be extra sure and go through the whole process again.
The fumes are the biggest danger as they tend to linger long after the fuel has evaporated. I have heard that some people connect it up to thier car and run the exhaust fumes through it as the gas from this helps to neutralize the petrol fumes. Dont know how true that is as I dont have a car so have never tried it.

If all else fails, you could drop a match into it. Thatll get rid of all the fuel and the fumes and the paint and the metal and your face!!
(that was a joke.Dont drop a match in it! Get someone else to do it!!!)

Haven't tried yet. I'm going to do a test fit probably this Saturday.

I'm pretty amazed at the shape of this thing. The odometer said 95,000. I've seen a lot of police KZ1000 bikes and every single one had dings in the tank from cops dropping things on them. How this one came out unscathed I have no idea.

They look big, but they aren't :(. Most of the volume of the tank is taken up by the frame. 15 litres.

I think the most I've been able to get in my KZ1000A is about 3.8 gallons and still have the engine running on reserve. I don't know what the absolute total volume is.
