Ok How screwed am I (leaky tank) was created by GregZ
Well this blows. Yesterday smelled gas real bad in garage, couldn't find where it was coming from. Today same thing. Rode bike all day yesterday fine tuning smoothbores, bike is running spot on
Pulled plugs this morning all nice tan I was happy, bike running great
BAM!!! I find the gas smell. Crack in tank weld under the front of the seat by the hold down
Double F^%&* me

Ok what are my options. I reviewed all the tank liner kits. Eastwoods makes a kit that says will stop minor leaks. I have nothing to lose by trying one. Has anyone used this product ? the por15 kit says all leaks must be repaired before use. Then there is Redcoat??

Today I cleaned out tank with accetone and it's a pretty good leak. Pretty much every person who has seen the bike just loved the paint 2013 ford "ginger ale" off the new ford's
Any suggestions welcme
Here is crack area

Sure hope you can save it Greg, it looks great. I hear lots of bad news about Kreem but mine is 10 plus years with no problems. Tank was clean to start with though.

If you can find a welding shop who can Braze or silver solder the leaking area & then repaint the tank, you should be good.

Since the tank is already cleaned out have it TIG welded.....just regulate one PSI of airflow into it to prevent a big bang. TIG at the leak pinhole spot will not generate much heat and will not do any more paint damage. POR 15 is the best ..... but as a last resort when you cannot weld an area.

Have it welded and any compitant painter can blend it. And it's hidden by the seat so double bonus.

Any liner is only as good as the application.
Kreem gets bashed a lot because it was probably the most popular product for a while, so there were more chances of user error. My original tank has a 25+ yr old Kreem liner that is still intact & it is tough as nails.

West Systems marine epoxy & KBS are supposed to be good. In a case like this when the rust is bad enough to cause a leak, I'd probably use one of those. For a tank in decent condition, I wouldn't have a problem using Kreem or Por-15.

By Jeff.Saunders: What I've used on tanks that you can't seal using Kreem or Por15 is an marine epoxy resin to line the tank.
West systems marine resin epoxy. 105 resin and 205 hardener.
This mix creates a hard shell inside the tank that's impervious to gasoline. Use a 5:1 mix.

One thing you should consider is the cause of that crack. If the cause was enough to split a perfectly sound tank the tank may split even more if the problem is not permanently corrected. If you have the split repaired by welding or some other permanent method it should not grow or split again, but if you simply seal the split with a tank sealer the split may continue to grow and get worse. Thanks for the tip. Local machine/fab shop tig welded it and low pressure check for $20. They also had a gel applied around the painted area to prevent heat blisters. $20 no more leak and the front of the seat hides the paint loss area which I will have touched up
I'm stoked

Man, it is rare to be able to get anyone to fire up their tools for less than a 100 anymore. Nice repair.
