engine paint

im planing on painting my engine soon is there any special kinds of paint that are better than others give me some ideas, thanks

Cheap bbq paint works great. I even used it on headers and it stays nice for at least a season.

Motor Coater is real good. You have several steps to follow, but gives show quality finish. You might not use it but look into it.

The PJ-1 "Fast Black" is a pretty durable paint(if you like a black engine).

i dont want something that will only last for a season im trying to find something that will last.

For additional durability, if possible(and with the wife's or girlfriends O.K.) bake the black PJ-1 sprayed parts in an oven at 250-300 degrees for 60 minutes. The paint may outgas & smell, but do the baking with windows open. The finished paint job will be almost impossible to remove without grit blasting.

I forgot to mention, after spraying the parts withthe black PJ-1 paint, let it/them air dry for an hour, and then do the baking. I use hooks made from old wire coat hangers, but brazing wire will work along with 16 gauge buss wire.

if your looking for good durability, you may want to consider Gun Kote. it is similar to ceramic paints, but it has very good heat dissipation characteristics. It is very strong if surfaces are properly prepared and you bake it on correctly. I scraped my starter cover with a screw driver and had a difficult time scratching it. It also comes in many colors and sheens, however if you get black or olive green DO NOT BAKE IN YOUR HOUSE as they have trace amounts of lead in them. I got a oven for $10 on Craigslist and hooked it up in my garage.

Hey my wife has a brand spankin new kick ass oven so there is no way she'll let me get away with baking my parts in there. So... this may seem crazy but has anyone ever used a gas BBQ? I can maintain 250 degrees pretty easy and I can put the parts on a sheet of aluminum foil.
Why wouldn't this work?

I'd think a new,unused Gas or Charcoal BBQ would work, but if it has been cooking meat, the grease may vaporize, coating your engine/bike parts, making for a finish you'd not want.

I don't see why the BBQ method wont work.
I presume you talking about one that has a hood on it?

Just check it periodically and keep the parts raised of the hot plate.

I live in a community where hog nuts are a once a month special at the local bars and If you can catch enough "duck nuts" you might have the tools to open your own place.

By the way, I use the grill but I go upwards 300 deg. It stinks and she frowns but I usually burn it off real good before the steaks, burgers, and or ribs get their turn. To date I haven't had complaints either way.
